Canada’s Minister of International Trade Helps Grow Business Opportunities in Uruguay

Canada is committed to fostering and strengthening its growing ties with our Latin American partners and creating real opportunities for Canadian businesses looking to grow and expand beyond our border.  

Today, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne witnessed the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) between the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) and the Uruguayan Ministry of Interior, and Uruguayan Ministry of National Defense.

The MOUs will explore using a government-to-government contracting mechanism for transactions in defence and security related equipment and/or services. The non-binding agreements cover a large spectrum of potential transactions and open the door to eventual contracts for Canadian exporters.

Martin Zablocki, President and CEO of the Canadian Commercial Corporation, signed the MOUs on behalf of the Canadian Commercial Corporation.

  • Bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Uruguay totaled $245.05 million in 2016.
  • Canadian exports reached $150.64 million and were comprised of mainly crude oil, potassium chloride, and machinery.
