Canada’s humanitarian response in the global fight against COVID-19

September 10, 2020

Ottawa Ont – In May 2020, as part of the Government of Canada’s response to the global pandemic, Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) contracted services from Singapore-based GAIA Science PTE Ltd. to provide necessary products that can help protect against COVID-19.

CCC assisted GAC with the successful completion of these two separate contracts in August 2020, delivering 400,000 N95 respirator masks to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, which in turn distributed the masks to African member states with the greatest need; and provided 690,000 items of Personal Protective Equipment to ASEAN partners, including 90,000 surgical masks for the ASEAN Secretariat and a total of 600,000 N95 masks for Brunei, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Vietnam.

Ernie Briard, CCC’s interim President & CEO, stated that “CCC is pleased to assist as part of Canada’s global response to the pandemic. CCC is well positioned with its international contracting expertise and is ready to help with further efforts by Canada and with Canadian companies as they offer their capabilities internationally.”

Our role in sourcing supply for Government of Canada aid priorities

Through its contracting, procurement and project management expertise, CCC works with the federal government to assist GAC with the delivery of Canada’s in-kind contributions to foreign recipients all around the world.

Under a 2007 memorandum of understanding with Global Affairs Canada, CCC began its role in sourcing supply for stabilization and reconstruction, designed to deliver in-kind contributions as part of Canada’s international assistance. By connecting the Government of Canada with trusted suppliers, CCC quickly and efficiently delivers urgent equipment, supplies and services in rapidly changing environments.

Helping in the global response to COVID-19

As Canadians, we are fully aware that we are all in this together. It will take a truly global effort to respond to the COVID-19 situation, to support public health systems and lead our economies through to a more stable period.

CCC was created to be nimble in its ability to contract in times of urgent need. Our government to government (G2G) contracting model can facilitate urgent procurements in times such as these. We are available to help Canadian companies beyond our traditional sectors to include provision of medical equipment and supplies; agricultural products and food supplies; or, other emergency response products and services.
