G2G Contract with Peru for Major Irrigation Project

In 2024, the Government of Peru signed a government to government (G2G) contract with CCC and Hatch for technical assistance on a major agricultural infrastructure initiative in northern Peru.

The Chavimochic III project is designed to transform vast expanses of the country’s arid coastal land into highly productive farmland. Once fully operational, this expanded irrigation network will cover more than 111,000 hectares of previously dry terrain, greatly increasing the area available for agricultural use and export-oriented production.

Irrigation and drinking water

Named for the four valleys it crosses (Chao, Virú, Moche, and Chicama), the Chavimochic system already plays a vital role in La Libertad’s economy. Earlier phases not only irrigated crops but also supplied drinking water to roughly half of Trujillo’s population and helped drive significant growth in Peru’s agricultural exports, including asparagus, avocados, grapes, and other high-value products.

The third stage aims to build on these gains by extending irrigation to an additional 63,000 hectares and improving water supply infrastructure for roughly 48,000 hectares that are already in production.

Economic benefits

With a planned investment exceeding US $750 million, Chavimochic III is expected to deliver wide-ranging economic benefits. Authorities project that expanded irrigation will help generate up to 150,000 jobs and could push annual agricultural export revenues above US $10 billion, positioning Peru as a leading global producer of key crops such as grapes, avocados, and blueberries.
