Aecon’s Bermuda International Airport Redevelopment Project, made possible by CCC’s government-to-government contract, has earned a prestigious Gold Award for Infrastructure (International). Presented by the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships (CCPPP), Aecon is among only five winners of the 2021 National Awards for Innovation and Excellence in Public-Private Partnerships.
“On behalf of everyone at CCC, I am delighted to see Aecon recognized with such an important award. It was our honour to work, once again, with our partners at Aecon and enable the co-development of this long-awaited P3 project for the people of Bermuda,” said Kim Douglas, CCC’s VP of Business Development and Marketing.
By using innovative thinking and Canadian P3 expertise, Bermuda was able to achieve what many small airports in the world have struggled to do — attract private sector investment to finance a major capital redevelopment. The awards committee noted that the $300-million project, the largest P3 infrastructure deal in Bermuda’s history, is setting new standards internationally for others to follow.
The bespoke G2G contract and guarantee mechanism, supported by an underlying P3 commercial and financing structure, enabled the new 288,000 square foot facility to meet the latest international standards and be completed on time and on budget. In fact, Aecon dramatically lowered the project’s initial capital budget, without compromising standards. In addition, the redesigned terminal, which factored in the impacts of climate change, can now withstand windspeeds of 277 kilometres an hour, equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane.
“At CCC, we aspire to bring together Canadian businesses and their government buyers in commercial contracts that provide quality solutions to challenging problems and deliver environmental, social, and governance benefits,” added Kim Douglas.
The new terminal helps to showcase Bermuda’s identity and will withstand the changes in environmental conditions over the next decades in a way that the old one was simply not designed to do. CCC is proud to have enabled Aecon to bring Canadian expertise and technology to the Government of Bermuda and the Bermuda Airport Authority.
