Phase 2 of CCC’s Guajimía sanitation project on track

November 30, 2022

Ottawa, CANADA – The Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) is pleased to announce that the 1st stage of phase 2 of the sanitation project of the Guajimía ravine in Santo Domingo Oeste, Dominican Republic, is on track for completion.

The Director General of the Corporación del Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Santo Domingo (CAASD), Felipe Suberví, highlighted the progress of the project during a tour of the construction of 200 apartments that will house families that were relocated because of the Guajimia project. The tour, which took place in late November, was also attended by the Mayor of Santo Domingo Oeste, José Andújar, the Governor for the province, Julia Drullard and Christine Laberge, Canadian Ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

The work is being completed by Canada’s Groupe Helios under a USD $50M government to government (G2G) contract between CCC and CAASD. The 1st stage of phase 2 will result in the construction of apartments, the cleaning of some of the sections of the canals, and the start of construction of new, buried waste canals. A total of 344 apartments will also be built to accommodate relocated families, 200 apartments in one site and 144 on a different site. Once the 1st stage is completed, the cleaning of the ravine, the construction of a wastewater treatment plant and the outfall at sea will be delivered as part of the 2nd and 3rd stages, both requiring additional financing.

Groupe Helios secured the contract as a result of concerted joint efforts between CCC and Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service in the Dominican Republic to advance the project. The financing was then arranged by JP Morgan, with a sovereign risk insurance provided by Export Development Canada (EDC).
